Located in Central Boulder, Chautauqua was founded in 1898. Chautauquas began in New York, and became known as United States educational movements that grew popular through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauquas hosted forums for educated speakers, musicians, teachers, entertainers, preachers, and more.

The Colorado Chautauqua is the only Chautauqua west of the Mississippi River, and is unique in that it is nondenominational, and mainly secular in origin. Many Chautauquas had religious influence.

The Colorado Chautauqua and its 40-acre region is a National Historic Landmark and popular tourist spot. It is unique in that it is one of few continually operating Chautauquas, and the only year-round Chautauqua.

Chautauqua was in risk of a collapse in the 1970s, but has recovered to become a permanent part of the Boulder community.

The Colorado Chautauqua features a Victorian-style auditorium surrounded by several cottages--some owner occupied, and some rented out by the Colorado Chautauqua Association.
